How Did IRONMAN all begin??
Whilst at an awards ceremony for the Waikiki Swimming Club, John Collins who was a member of the Navy stationed in Hawaii, and his fellow athletes began discussing which athletes were the fittest? Runners, Bikers or Swimmers?? John Collins and his wife Judy decided to combine three of the toughest existing endurance races on the island as they had both competed successfully in Triathlons. On February 18, 1978, 15 competitors, including John Collins, came to the shores of Waikiki to take on the very first ever IRONMAN event.
