Oasis: Quite Possibly The Best Band of The ’90s
The 1990s had some pretty great bands that defined the era. After all, it was the era of true hip-hop, grunge, boy bands and more. There seemed to be something for every musical taste on the planet and music just seemed more authentic back then compared to now. CDs were all the rage, which meant artists actually cared about making great albums filled with tracks that stood the test of time instead of chart-topping hits as it’s like today.
One great band that rose to great fame in the ’90s was Oasis. The English rock band from Manchester first formed in 1991 and had steady success through the era. The group developed from an earlier group called the Rain, which consisted of Liam Gallagher on vocals and tambourine. They were later joined by Liam’s older brother Noel Gallagher on lead guitar and vocals, and they released their debut album Definitely Maybe in 1994. The record-setting album was a result of more than a year of doing live shows. They finally caught a big break after Creation Records co-owner Alan McGee discovered the band at a club in Glasgow, Scotland. The album became No. 1 on the music charts after a week of its release, becoming the fastest selling debut album in the UK at the time.
Despite being a successful time for the band, internal arguments and strife would harm the band’s future. Even though one would think that making music with your brother would be a good thing, it was totally the opposite for the Gallagher brothers. The brothers are notoriously known for their disagreements, which later led Noel leaving the band 1999 (after a backstage brawl with his younger brother at a festival in Paris). But before then, the band was having a lot of trouble. In 1995, their drummer, Tony McCarroll, was ousted for clashing with the brothers. Then Bassist Paul McGuigan briefly left Oasis later that year because of nervous exhaustion. It was also the same year that the band released their second album, (What’s the Story) Morning Glory?, which was a commercial success and later became the fourth best-selling album in UK Chart history thanks to two major singles: “Wonderwall” and “Don’t Look Back In Anger.” The album also had the non-UK single “Champagne Supernova” that reached No. 1 on the U.S. modern rock charts.
Their third album Be Here Now dropped in 1997 and was the band’s most anticipated album and was the fastest-selling album in British history, coming out on top at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 in the U.S.A. Even though much of the early reviews were positive, once the buzz died down, many criticized the album for its long songs, overproduction and heavier sound that many didn’t really enjoy. By this time, the whole Britpop movement was losing interest and many felt that the band was losing the interest of fans.
After the fallout between Noel and Liam in 1999, Oasis still went on to drop more music without Noel, but things were never the same for fans. There have since been rumors that the band will reunite for music, but nothing concrete has come to light and fans are still waiting on the day that their favorite band finally reunites to create good music again!
